# Delete GitHub branch

> Delete a branch reference from a GitHub repository.

`github.deleteBranch` deletes one repository branch.

```ts automations/delete-github-branch.automation.ts theme={null}
import { automation } from "automate.ax"
import { github } from "automate.ax/github"

export default automation("Delete GitHub branch", () => {
  github.deleteBranch({
    owner: "SentsCo",
    repository: "automate.ax",
    branch: "release/old",
  })
})
```

Provide the repository and branch name without the `refs/heads/` prefix. Returns `{}` after deletion. GitHub rejects deletion of a protected branch or the repository's default branch. Requires Contents write permission.
