# List GitHub branches

> List branches in a GitHub repository.

`github.listBranches` lists repository branches and their head commits.

import { github } from "automate.ax/github"

export default automation("List protected branches", () => {
  const branches = github.listBranches({
    owner: "SentsCo",
    protected: true,
    repository: "automate.ax",
  })
})
```

Provide `owner` and `repository`. Optional `protected` filters by protection state. `page` defaults to `1`; `perPage` defaults to `30` and accepts up to `100`. Returns each branch's `name` and head commit `sha`. Requires Contents read permission.
