# On GitHub release event

> Start an automation from any GitHub release webhook action.

`onGitHubReleaseEvent` exposes the broad GitHub `release` webhook family, including created, edited, deleted, prereleased, published, released, and unpublished actions.

```ts automations/watch-github-releases.automation.ts theme={null}
import { automation } from "automate.ax"
import { onGitHubReleaseEvent } from "automate.ax/github"
export default automation("Watch GitHub releases", () => {
  const event = onGitHubReleaseEvent()
  event.transform(({ action, release, repository }) => ({
    action,
    repository: repository.full_name,
    tag: release.tag_name,
  }))
})
```

Optional static `account` defaults to the project binding. Returns `Signal<GitHubReleaseEvent>`, GitHub's typed release webhook union with `action`, `release`, `repository`, `sender`, `installation`, and action-specific fields. The installation needs Contents read permission and repository access. Prefer [On GitHub release published](/reference/integrations/github/triggers/on-release-published) when only publication matters.
